Vioxx® is a drug that is referred to as a Cox-2 inhibitor.
Cox-2 inhibitors also include such drugs as Celebrex® and Bextra®. Cox-2 inhibitors are nonsteriodal, anti-inflammatory drugs referred to as NSAID's. Which are prescribed to treat arthritis and muscle pain.
Merck voluntarily withdrew Vioxx on September 30, 2004 after an 18 month study of cancer patients revealed increased the risk of heart attack, stroke, and blood clots.
Pfizer withdrew Bextra on April 7, 2005 due to the drug's side effects which included heart attack, stroke, blood clots and skin disorders. Mainly Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.
Celebrex is the only one of these that remains on the market.
Merck extensively marketed Vioxx as highly safe and effective while minimizing its risks compared to other drugs on the market. But recent lawsuits question when Merck was first made aware that fatal side effects were associated with Vioxx and whether the company failed to inform public health authorities of these side effects, in a timely manner.
